Liquidierung der Krise der Volkswirtschaft printed by Julius Kittls Nachfolger

ZAJONC, Franz. Liquidierung der Krise der Volkswirtschaft [Overcoming the Crisis of the National Economy]. Mähr.-Ostrau (Moravská Ostrava): Self-published by the author; printed by Julius Kittls Nachfolger, 1934.

Large 8vo (22 × 15 cm). 46, [1] pp. Original wrappers with an arresting modernist typographic design in black and red. Promotional subscription/order leaflet laid in. Fine condition.

An uncommon self-published economic treatise issued at the height of the Great Depression. Zajonc analyzes the causes of the global economic crisis and proposes a comprehensive program for recovery, discussing free trade, monetary circulation, capital, agriculture, industry, unemployment, taxation, public debt, and international finance. Statistical tables and proposals for the economic reconstruction of Europe conclude the work.

The volume was printed by Julius Kittls Nachfolger, one of the most important German-language publishing houses in interwar Czechoslovakia. During the 1930s the firm became a significant outlet for books that could no longer be published in Nazi Germany, issuing works by leading émigré and Austrian writers including Friedrich Torberg, Ernst Weiß, Ludwig Winder, Julien Green, and Louis-Ferdinand Céline. Contemporary Nazi publications repeatedly denounced Kittls as an "Emigrantenverlag" ("émigré publisher"), while later scholarship has shown that the Reich Chamber of Literature considered prohibiting the firm's entire output but ultimately refrained for economic reasons, opting instead to ban individual titles.

An outstanding example of early 1930s Central European graphic design with Constructivist wrappers.

Scarce interwar Czech imprint of one of the most important anti-Nazi German-language publishing houses of the period.
