Association copy of Modernist Theatre treatise
Bartoš, Jan. O moderním divadelním projevu [On Modern Theatrical Expression]. Praha: Zátiší, Knihy srdce i ducha, 1922. First edition. Hardcover, 21.5 × 14 cm. 41, [4] pp. Original orange pictorial boards with bold cubo-futurist cover design by architect and stage designer Bedřich Feuerstein. Association copy, inscribed by the author to the cover artist: on the front free endpaper, Jan Bartoš writes: "Váženému příteli arch. B. Feuersteinovi na památku – Jan Bartoš." (“To my esteemed friend, architect B. Feuerstein, as a remembrance – Jan Bartoš.”). Additionally, the volume bears Feuerstein’s characteristic mark of ownership: the Japanese character for ten (天, “sky”), which he habitually drew in his personal library. A scarce and important Czech avant-garde treatise on modern theatrical expression, advocating for new forms of stage language and performance in line with contemporary European avant-garde experimentation. Issued as volume II of the Pantheon series. The collaboration with Feuerstein—one of the leading Czech architects and scenographers of the interwar avant-garde, known for his work with Le Corbusier and Antonín Raymond—makes this an especially significant association copy. Condition: A near-fine, bright copy; minor rubbing to spine ends; interior clean and crisp.
