ŠTYRSKÝ – TOYEN – NEČAS Guide to Paris and Its Surroundings
ŠTYRSKÝ, Jindřich – TOYEN – NEČAS, Karel. Průvodce Paříží a okolím [Guide to Paris and Its Surroundings]. Prague: Odeon, [ca. 1930s].8vo. 802[2] pp. With 22 photographic illustrations, 14 city plans, and 42 maps, all present, including the folding maps housed in the rear pocket. Original publisher's red cloth, titled in black on spine and upper cover. An unusually substantial Czech guide to Paris, produced with contributions by the surrealist painter Toyen, the artist Jindřich Štyrský, and writer Karel Nečas. Far more than a conventional Baedeker-style handbook, it combines practical travel information with detailed cultural, historical, and architectural coverage of Paris and its environs. The volume is particularly notable for its extensive cartographic apparatus and its association with two of the leading figures of the Czech avant-garde.Very good condition. Light rubbing and a few faint marks to the cloth; contents clean and sound. All maps and plans are present, including in the rear pocket. A well-preserved example of an increasingly uncommon Czech interwar travel guide with strong avant-garde associations.
