Association copy of Honzl's The Revolving Stage
Honzl, Jindřich. Roztočené jeviště. Prague: Odeon, 1925. 8vo. First edition of this seminal work on modernist and avant-garde theatre by one of Czechoslovakia’s leading theatrical innovators. This copy is warmly inscribed by Honzl to his close friend and Devětsil colleague Vít Obrtel: “To My Friend, Vít Obrtel. Warmly, Jindřich Honzl.” Rebound in contemporary orange cloth boards, with the original striking front wrapper—featuring a photomontage design by Jindřich Štyrský and Toyen— laid in. Title page and typo by Karel Teige. The text reflects Honzl’s pioneering approach to theatrical theory and staging, aligning with the Devětsil group’s bold interdisciplinary experiments of the 1920s. Condition: Very good. Light handling wear; mild toning to pages consistent with age. Boards clean and sound. Front wrapper trimmed with image vibrant and well-preserved. An exceptional association copy, linking two key figures of the Czech avant-garde—Honzl in theatre and Obrtel in architecture and design—enhanced by the collaboration of Štyrský and Toyen on the cover art. Obrtel and Honzl directly collaborated on a number of the Osvobozené divadlo's (Liberated Theatre) performances, including Vladislav Vančura’s Učitel a žák (Teacher and Pupil) — directed by Honzl with stage design by Obrtel.
