Netherlands, ca. 1930s. Three unused advertising banderoles for 250 g packages of Van Nelle coffee, each 26 × 7.25 cm. Designed by Jac. Jongert. Three variants printed in red, yellow, and blue: Rood Merk, Geel Merk, and Blauw Merk. Jac. (Jacob) Jongert (1883–1942) was an important Dutch graphic and commercial designer and a professor at the Rotterdam Academy. From 1919 he worked extensively for the Rotterdam firm Van Nelle, developing packaging, advertisements, posters, and other printed matter and playing a significant role in establishing the company's modern visual identity. His work for Van Nelle is among the best-known examples of interwar Dutch commercial graphic design. These banderoles employ Jongert's use of primary colors and rigorous geometry reflecting the influence of De Stijl and the broader development of Dutch Functionalist and New Typographic design.
