Bremen: Buch- & Kunst-Handlung C. A. Halen, c. 1876–1880. Cloth portfolio, 17.75 × 12 cm. 15 loose photographic plates, each with an original albumen photograph mounted on card and photographer/publisher information on verso. Original red cloth portfolio elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt and black with the binder’s ticket of Hübel & Denck, Leipzig, to the inner cover. A collection of nineteenth-century photographic views of Bremen and its surroundings, including prominent public buildings, streets, parks, waterways, windmills and panoramic views of the city. Several photographs have captions printed within the image. The versos identify the photographer as Grünwald, “Photogr. Institut für Portraits u. Landschaften,” Wall No. 86, Bremen, and advertise an award received at the International Art Exhibition in Utrecht in 1876. The 15 plates are loose as issued. We have been unable to determine the number of photographs originally supplied with the portfolio and therefore cannot confirm that the present group is complete. An attractive early photographic souvenir of Bremen, retaining its richly decorated publisher’s portfolio. Photographs generally well preserved, with some light fading and age-toning. Portfolio very good, flaps slightly dusty.
