Centrotex Trade Sampler of Czechoslovak Woven Ribbons and Trimmings, c. 1960s

An unusually extensive commercial sample book produced for Centrotex, the state-controlled Czechoslovak textile import and export concern. The samples comprise decorative woven ribbons and braids in numerous widths and colour combinations. Designs range from relatively restrained geometric bands to elaborate floral patterns, many drawing on the forms and vivid colouring of Czech and Slovak folk embroidery. Several patterns are presented in complete series of alternative colourways. A particularly attractive survival of the Czechoslovak textile export trade and its adaptation of regional folk ornament for industrial production and international marketing.

Centrotex was established in 1948 following the nationalisation of Czechoslovak foreign trade. It held the state monopoly for the import and export of textile raw materials and manufactured textile goods. Since Czechoslovakia lacked many textile raw materials, Centrotex concentrated on importing these while exporting finished products to earn foreign currency. Its remit encompassed fabrics, knitted goods, clothing, household textiles, carpets, yarns and related textile products. In 1968 it was reorganised as a joint-stock foreign-trade company.

Some rubbing and fraying to the portfolio, with light soiling and occasional marks to the mounting cards. Contemporary numerical and price annotations to several plates. The textile samples remain notably fresh and bright. Overall very good condition.
