Analogon 1: Surrealism, Psychoanalysis, Structuralism — A Crisis of ConsciousnessAnalogon: Surrealismus – psychoanalysa – strukturalismus. No. 1: Krize vědomí [Crisis of Consciousness]. Prague, June 1969. 4to. 96 + xii pp. Original illustrated wrappers. Layout and design by Roman Erben. Numerous reproductions of surrealist works from the 1930s through the late 1960s. In Czech, with a twelve-page summary in French. The first and, at the time, only issue of the Czech surrealist journal Analogon, edited by Vratislav Effenberger. Further planned issues were suppressed during the period of Normalization, and no. 2 did not appear until 1990. Contributors include Jiří Brabec, Zbyněk Havlíček, Květoslav Chvatík, and Marxist philosopher Robert Kalivoda. The issue also contains an interview with Claude Lévi-Strauss, translations of André Breton, extracts from the writings of Karel Teige, eight pages of selections from Záviš Kalandra, Breton’s “Open Letter to Paul Éluard,” and Breton and Leon Trotsky’s manifesto “For an Independent Revolutionary Art.” An important document of the brief revival of Czech surrealist publishing around the Prague Spring and its subsequent suppression. Block of pages detached from the spine of the wrappers; otherwise very good.
