This large Functionalist building, strongly influenced in scheme by the designs of August Perret and Le Corbusier, was designed in 1929 by the young Devětsil architects, Josef Havlíček and Karel Honzík and was considered the first “skyscraper” in Prague and at the time of construction the highest building in Prague. The design was chosen over a number of more conservative entries (including by Josef Gočár) and marked the dawn of large-scale functionalist construction in Prague. Honzik writes in his memoirs From an Avant-garde Life about the 5-year struggle to actually get the structure built, including all the modifications required, after the duo's design won the competition.
