Large folio (35 × 25 cm). 10 original linocut plates on holland paper, loose as issued in original printed wrapper. Copy no. 162 (from the unsigned edition of 250 copies, numbered 21–270), all plates individually pencil-signed by the artist. With a two-page introductory text by Miloslav Novotný. Czech modernist portfolio of boldly cut linoleum portraits depicting major French Symbolist and fin-de-siècle writers, including Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Maurice Maeterlinck, and Rachilde. Karel Votlučka (1893–1961) was a Czech painter, printmaker, and illustrator, trained at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under Jan Preisler and Max Švabinský. He is best known for his paintings of Prague architecture and for book illustrations associated with Plzeň-based literary circles. Very good condition. Inv. BX4
