Schulz's first novel published shortly after joining Devětsil. Exploring the relationship between the animate and inanimate worlds, book has also been viewd in part as Schulz's attempt to appease Devětsil's collective-proletarian inclinations; he then quickly embraced their poeticist tendencies in a collection of poetry entitled North South East West, but was ousted from the group soon after on charges of plaigarism.
