Czech Socialist Avant-Garde: Antar and Slunce — Two ISAV Publications with Matching Photographic Covers, 1931–1932

Antar. ABC dyalektického materializmu: Metoda správného myšlení [ABC of Dialectical Materialism: The Method of Correct Thinking]. Prague: Jaroslav Hošek, December 1931. 8vo, 40 pp. Original photographic wrappers printed in red and grey. First volume of Edyce Slunce. Minor wear to wrappers and spine, with minor nick to front cover and small pieces adhesive tape on inner wrappers and border of first two pages. Together with: Slunce: Noviny života mladých [Sun: Newspaper of Young People's Lives]. Year 4, nos. 7–8. Prague: ISAV, October 1932. 4to, pp. 58–71, continuously paginated. Complete double issue. Original photographic front cover, modernist typography, and geometric illustrations. Contemporary owner's signature along upper border. Amended edition following confiscation (Po konfiskaci opravené vydání). Two related publications of ISAV, a radical socialist youth organization active in interwar Czechoslovakia. Both reproduce the same photograph of trees on their covers, establishing a direct visual connection between the organization's book publishing and its periodical Slunce. The booklet introduces the principles of dialectical materialism, while Slunce addresses proletarian youth culture, politics, literature, and social questions. The periodical includes constructivist-influenced illustrations and experimental typography. Its explicit designation as a corrected edition following confiscation documents the political pressures faced by the publication. Most likely designed by the publisher Jaroslav Hošek. The pair documents the relationship between radical socialist politics, youth culture, and modernist graphic design in early 1930s Czechoslovakia.
