French Silk and Ribbon Sample Chart, Autumn 1928
Fédération de la Soie. Carte de nuances de la soie-nouveautés: Automne 1928. Série 6401–6544 [Silk Novelty Colour Chart: Autumn 1928]. Lyon and Saint-Étienne: Industries Lyonnaises de la Soie / Fabrique de Rubans de Saint-Étienne, 1928. 8vo. Five-panel accordion-fold colour chart mounted within cloth-hinged boards.
An attractive commercial sample book presenting 144 numbered shades adopted and recommended by the silk and ribbon manufacturers of Lyon and Saint-Étienne for the autumn 1928 season. Each colour is represented by an actual mounted silk ribbon sample, arranged in named groups including Absinthe, Provence, Gala, Baltique, Eucalyptus, Améthyste, Rivière, Vieux-Rose, and Chambretiin. The textured front board is lettered in relief and printed with the emblems of Lyon and Saint-Étienne.
Boards stained and moderately worn with wear at the corners and edges. Occasional spotting and minor marks internally; the cloth hinges remain sound. The numerous silk samples are remarkably well preserved, retaining their vivid original colours. Some staining to text on plate verso. A scarce document of the French luxury textile industry and interwar colour design. Overall, a good copy.
