Der Antisemitismus in Russland 1909

TOLSTOI, Graf J[wan Iwanowitsch]. Der Antisemitismus in Russland. Aus dem Russischen übersetzt von Arcadius Silberstein. – Frankfurt a. M.: J. Kauffmann, 1909. 8vo (22 × 14.5 cm). VIII, 138 pp. Original publisher’s printed wrappers, lettered in black on burgundy paper. First German edition of Count Ivan I. Tolstoi’s penetrating critique of anti-Jewish policies in late-imperial Russia, here in the rarely seen original softcover issue as issued by the Judaica publisher J. Kauffmann. Tolstoi, a liberal-minded statesman and Minister of Education under Witte, condemns the legislative, educational, and social discriminations against Jews—covering the Ansiedelungszone (Pale of Settlement), Prozentnorm (quota system), pogroms, and administrative “measures” under Alexander III and Nicholas II. His treatise stands as a rare insider denunciation of Tsarist antisemitism in the years preceding the First World War. With bookseller’s stamp “Libraria Hasefer” on front publisher page; owner’s signature in ink on title page. Very good condition. Inv. H5
