The Prague Street Cries Handcolored
Paul Nettl Der Prager Kaufruf [The Prague Street Cries] Prag: Gesellschaft deutscher Bücherfreunde in Böhmen, 1930. First and limited edition, published as the ninth release of the Gesellschaft deutscher Bücherfreunde in Böhmen. One of only 300 numbered copies, this being No. 242. Small 4to (17.5 × 15.5 cm). 22 pp. introduction and colophon. Complete with 48 lithographic plates, of which 36 are hand-colored, and 12 in black & white. Plates loose as issued in the original publisher’s portfolio and housed in the matching slipcase with marbled boards with gilt lettering to the leather spine . Typography and printing by the Offizin Carl Gerold’s Sohn, Vienna; lithographs prepared by Unger & Göschl, Vienna; hand-coloring executed by Gertrud Krammer-Zappe after originals preserved in the portrait collection of the Austrian National Library (formerly the Fideikommissbibliothek). Binding copied from the 1829 Prague portfolio by the Viennese bookbinder Hermann Scheibe. A scarce bibliophile edition, faithfully reproducing the celebrated 1829 series of lithographs Der Prager Kaufruf, depicting the cries and costumes of Prague’s street vendors. Paul Nettl (1889–1972), Austrian-Czech musicologist and cultural historian, provides the scholarly introduction. Very good condition. Inv. H4ob
