Stanislaw Jakubowski The Gods of the Slavs Signed
Jakubowski, Stanislaw. Bogowie Slowian [The Gods of the Slavs/Les Dieux des Slaves]. Krakow, Powsciagliwosc i praca: 1933. 34.5x28 cm. 58 [1] pp. 132 woodcut illustrations (21 full‑page plates + 111 smaller woodcuts in the text) depicting the main deities and mythological figures of the pre-Christian Slavs. Each plate is accompanied by a short descriptive text explaining the deity’s role and symbolism. In Polish, English and French. An example of the interwar cultural revival in Poland exploring pre-Christian Slavic heritage, Jakubowski’s work aimed to reclaim and reinterpret pagan mythology as part of Polish identity. Expressionist and geometric in style and influenced by early 20th-century modernism and the Polish woodcut revival, the book is also part of the European trend of "mythological portfolios", similar to Art Deco and nationalist-inspired myth cycles in other countries. Signed by the artist on the title page, but not numbered. One of 3,000 copies printed on wood-free paper. There were also 15 copies printed on Japanese "Nagaban Soih" paper, numbered 1–15 and five personally printed by the artist himself. Very good condition. Small tears at overlapping edges of original wrappers, 5-cm hairline tear to lower border of front cover.
