Inscribed by Teige to the architect Ludwig Hilberseimer (whose work is also featured in the book) in 1929, the same year the latter was appointed as a teacher of urban planning and architecture at the Bauhaus. Hilberseimer was brought in by Hannes Meyer, who had expanded the Bauhaus's focus on socially engaged architecture and urbanism. Hilberseimer's ideas aligned closely with Meyer’s Marxist-oriented vision for architecture as a tool for social reform. After the Bauhaus closed in 1933 under Nazi pressure, Hilberseimer emigrated to the United States in 1938 and joined Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), where he worked closely with Mies van der Rohe, continuing to develop urban planning models.
