The Tongue Cut Sparrow. Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 2. Tokyo: T. Hasegawa, [1902–1911]. 15.5 × 10 cm. Unpaginated. Original color woodblock-printed crepe-paper wrappers, stab-bound with silk thread. Printed on Japanese crepe paper (chirimen-gami), with numerous color woodblock illustrations throughout. Very good condition, with light wear and minor age-toning to wrappers and a few pages.
A charming later printing of one of the best-known titles in Hasegawa Takejirō’s celebrated Japanese Fairy Tale Series, produced in Tokyo for an international readership. The traditional Japanese tale of the tongue-cut sparrow is presented in English and extensively illustrated with delicate color woodblock prints. The back-page advertisement lists the first twenty titles in the series as well as the first three titles of the second series. This issue, bearing Hasegawa’s 38 Yotsuya Hommura address, appears to date from approximately 1902–1911.
