A survey of Jewish architectural and artistic heritage in interwar Czechoslovakia, issued by the Monument Commission of the Supreme Council of the Jewish Religious Community Associations in Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. Conceived as the first publication in a projected series documenting Jewish monuments throughout the republic, reflecting one of the earliest systematic preservation efforts undertaken by the Jewish community itself.
With a foreword by Norbert Adler and a preliminary statement by Prof. Dr. S. H. Lieben, the book contains four illustrated studies: Leopold Ehrmann on synagogues, S. H. Lieben on Jewish tombstones in the historic lands, Heinrich Flesch and Dolní Kounice on synagogue art, and Dr. Simon Adler on documentary sources. Richly illustrated throughout with photographic plates depicting synagogues, cemeteries, architectural details, and ritual monuments.
An important documentary record of the Jewish cultural landscape of Czechoslovakia before its devastation, and a significant publication in the history of Jewish monument preservation. Text in German.
