1939 Jewish Persecution Decree

47x31cm Original 1939 Decree on the segregation and persecution of Jewish citizens in Prague. VG condition. In Czech. DECREE. In the interest of public safety and public peace and order, I issue on the basis of Article 2 and 3, para. 1 of the Act on the Organization of Political Administration of July 14, 1927, no. 125 Coll. Regarding contact between the non-Jewish and Jewish population in public life, the following prohibitions apply: I. With immediate effect, I forbid persons of Jewish origin from visiting the following public spaces: the restaurant on Slovanské ostrov, the Mánes restaurant and café, on Strělecké ostrov, restaurants on Petřín and in Hanavské pavilon, in Riegrový sady and the main restaurant (Slechtovy) in Královská obora, visiting the Municipal House of Prague, the National House in Vinohrady, the cafes Hlavovy na Král. Vinohrady, as well as the National House in Smíchov, The owners of these restaurants and cafes are ordered to immediately post signs reading "Juden nicht aussichtung" (Jews Not Allowed). If the owners of other inns, restaurants, cafes, wine bars and the like is a person of Jewish origin, or which are frequented by the overwhelming majority of Jews, they are ordered to post the sign “Jüdische Unternehmung" (Jewish Establishment), placed in a highly visible place, both outside and inside the room. This signage must be carried out within 14 days of the publication of this decree. Owners of other public spaces, where local conditions allow, are ordered to set aside a separate room for Jewish visitors, so that non-Jewish visitors are not forced to associate with persons of Jewish origin. This special room must be marked as intended for Jewish visitors. Where it would not be possible to carry out this measure, the owners of public rooms are ordered to mark their establishment with the sign "Juden nicht zussichtung" (Jews Not Allowed), both externally and internally. Persons of Jewish origin are prohibited from staying in public rooms that, according to this decree, will be designated in whole or in part as inaccessible to Jews. II. Owners of public baths are ordered to reserve a special part of the bath for visitors of Jewish origin and to mark it as such. If this is not possible, they must make arrangements so that visitors of Jewish origin are time separated from visitors of non-Jewish origin. III. With immediate effect, I forbid persons of Jewish origin from swimming or lingering near city swimming pools and in all publicly accessible swimming pools, including private ones. The owners of swimming pools, public and private swimming pools are ordered to mark their businesses apparently with the inscription "Juden nicht zuszühling" (Jews Not Allowed). IV. I order the owners or operators of trade enterprises and other enterprises operated in a trade manner, who are of Jewish origin, to mark their enterprises in a way that is obvious to customers with the sign "Jüdisches Geschäft" (Jewish Establishment). I order the administrations of public institutions such as hospitals, asylums, almshouses, and the administrations of sanatoriums to take measures that would exclude the use of the same rooms and facilities by persons of non-Jewish and Jewish origin at the same time, and to ensure that these persons are housed separately. Failure to comply with the regulations, as regards the prohibitions given by the above decree, is punished according to the provisions of Article 3. of the Act by a fine from 10 crowns to 5,000 crowns or a prison sentence from 12 hours to 14 days.
