1938 Augustin Tschinkel design for the State Graphic School - Gotické a renesanční filigrány

Tschinkel Augustin, Gotické a renesanční filigrány [Gothic and Renaissance Filigrees] Prague: State Graphic School, 1938. Printed as special edition number 3 in the school's workshops in December 1938. 8 single-sided plates. Stiched binding. 15x10.5 cm. The only text on the final page with imprint reads: "Filigrees (translucent symbols) of old paper were used as trademarks for papermills and paper goods. The first known filigree dates to 1282 and represents a cross. At first, filigrees were usually monograms. Designers took filigree motifs from heraldry and medieval symbols, especially religious ones. Although they were of a symbolic nature, they also had a practical meaning, i.e. they indicated the origin of goods, and sometimes their type and quality. Filigrees have largely preserved this meaning to date. Some paper formats were distinguished by the their filigree images. These samples are taken from C. M. Briquet's work Les filigranes. The places and dates indicate when and where the papers were signed or printed." VG condition.
