1933 early Czech cocktail handbook
Chmelík, Alois - Barman - 278 receptů a návrhů k přípravě cocktailů, bowlí, punchů, grogů, gobblerů, limonád atd. “Barman” by Alois Chmelík, published in 1933, is a fascinating piece of Czech cocktail history. Authored and self-published by Chmelík, it compiles 278 recipes and suggestions for making cocktails, bowls, punches, grogs, gobblers, lemonades, and more. This collection was part of the early development of bartending and mixology in Czechoslovakia during the 1920s and 1930s. One of the earliest Czech-language books by a local barman, Chmelík’s book emerged at a time when mixology was becoming a recognized craft in Prague, with formal mixology courses starting around 1931. The book features Chmelík himself on the front page, photographed behind the bar of “American Bar Juliš” by Victor Hugo Himmelreich — a rare archival image in Czech cocktail culture. 8vo. 54 [1]. pp. Very good condition.
