Printed by Kryl & Scotti in Nový Jičín as volume 16 of the bibliophile series Edice Philobiblon. No. 4 of 150 numbered copies signed by the author, printed on handmade Van Gelder paper. Zahradníček’s early poetry combined spiritual intensity, metaphysical reflection, and modern poetic language. During the 1930s and 1940s he became one of the leading voices of Czech Catholic poetry and worked as editor of the cultural journal Akord. After the Communist takeover in 1948, Zahradníček was targeted because of his religious convictions and independent intellectual position. In 1951 he was arrested in a political trial and sentenced to 13 years in prison. During imprisonment he secretly composed poems that later formed some of the most powerful works of Czech spiritual literature. Very good condition.
