1926 Moravian Dialects with map

Trávníček, František – Moravská nářečí [Moravian Dialects]. Prague: Národopisná společnost českoslovanská, 1926. 4to. 21,[1] pp. Original printed wrappers. With the large folding Dialektologická mapa moravská (67 × 88 cm) inserted in the rear pocket as issued.

An early and influential survey of the dialects of Moravia by the distinguished Czech linguist František Trávníček (1888–1961), professor at Masaryk University and one of the founders of modern Czech dialectology. The text outlines the principal dialect groups of Moravia (Moravian Slovak, Haná, Lachian, and Moravian-Wallachian) while the accompanying large-format color map graphically delineates their geographical distribution and internal subdivisions. Prepared at the Zeměpisný ústav of Masaryk University in Brno, the map represents one of the earliest comprehensive visual syntheses of Moravian dialect geography.

A desirable complete copy retaining the large folding map in the original rear sleeve. Very good condition overall. Wrappers with 2 cm tears at the head and foot of the spine, minor loss along the rear wrapper edges, and light general wear; map clean and well preserved with the expected fold lines.

A scarce and important document in the history of Czech linguistics and regional ethnography.
